Choosing Music for a Requiem Mass

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Schubert’s Ave Maria is a beautiful song; it is up there with the most requested songs in my repertoire list.  Did you know that there are hundreds of different composers that have set this beautiful verse to music?  Many of them are also very uplifting and it is worth exploring some of the other versions.  Some of my favourites include those composed by: Caccini, Arcadelt or Gounod/Bach.  Other popular requests include: Panis Angelicus, Ave Verum Corpus, Irish Blessing, and Danny Boy.

A lot of people often need to choose music quickly for a requiem mass.    Some families don’t know where to start and turn to the celebrant or musicians for ideas.  Popular hymns include: The Lord is my Shepherd, How Great Thou Art, Nearer My God to Thee, Abide with Me, Amazing Grade, Here I am Lord, On Eagle’s Wings, Gentle Woman to name a few.   People are often comforted by  tunes that they are familiar with.  There are many more to choose from and I’m always happy to help with suggestions when families ask me.

Whether it is a religious or civil ceremony, ask yourself the following questions:   If the person followed a particular faith, did they have a favourite hymn?   What music did they like?  If it is a civil service perhaps the exit or reflection piece could be something special that they loved to listen to.

Including live musicians in a service helps to celebrate the life of a loved one perfectly and assists family and friends in reflection of the person’s life through music and song.    Brisbane Funeral Musicians
